How Prayer Strengthens Marriage: An Interview with Stefanie and Caleb Rouse

Stefanie and Caleb Rouse are passionate about strengthening marriages through the power of prayer. As authors of 52 Prayers for My Husband and 52 Prayers for My Wife, they’ve created biblical prayer guides to help couples grow together, keeping God at the center. In this interview, Stefanie and Caleb share their heart for marriage ministry, the inspiration behind their prayer books, and how intentional prayer has deepened their own relationship. Their insights offer encouragement and wisdom for every season, whether you’re newlyweds or decades into marriage.

How can couples keep God at the center of their marriage, especially in busy seasons of life?

Having God at the center of your marriage is absolutely essential. As Ecclesiastes 4:12 reminds us, “A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” When God is an integral part of your relationship, it changes the atmosphere of your home, your conversations, and your connection.

So how do we keep God at the center, especially during the busy seasons of life? For us, it starts with rhythms—healthy spiritual habits that shape our days. Years ago, we made a committed decision to make time in God’s Word a non-negotiable part of our routine. For us, that means reading the Bible first thing in the morning, before checking our phones, diving into work, or even making coffee. That daily habit has enriched our marriage and laid a strong foundation built on Christ.

If you’re a couple looking to grow together in your faith, we recommend starting small. Block out a specific time each day to spend with the Lord. It can be together or individually—whatever works best in your current season. Start with just five minutes. Everyone has five minutes. Read a verse and pray a short, honest prayer. If you don’t know what to say, begin with gratitude. Thank God for the simple things: the chair you’re sitting in, the breath in your lungs, the gift of your spouse. Gratitude shifts the atmosphere of your heart and invites God into your day (1 Thessalonians 5:16–18).

This habit has transformed our lives, and we believe it can transform yours too.

What inspired you both to write 52 Prayers for My Husband and 52 Prayers for My Wife?

Prayer has been at the core of our relationship since the beginning. We prayed together on our first dates, bringing our hopes, fears, and our relationship before God. We’ve always believed that prayer isn’t just something we do for our marriage—it’s something that builds our marriage.

______

We’ve found that praying for each other, especially during hard times, helps us see our spouse through God’s eyes.

______

Over the years, we’ve shared countless prayers—prayers for future spouses, for healing, for connection, and for intimacy. These videos and prayers have reached millions of people around the world, and the impact has shown us one thing: prayer is powerful. As James 5:16 (NIV) says, “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”

That’s why writing these books felt like a natural next step. We wanted to give couples a simple, powerful way to grow closer to God and to each other through prayer. The prayers we’ve written and prayed over each other have changed our relationship. They’ve deepened our faith and created intimacy that no worldly tool could offer.

We’ve been amazed to hear how God has used these books to impact marriages across the globe. Prayer is how we bring our pain, praise, and purpose before the Father, and our hope is that these books help more couples experience that closeness with God and with each other.

How did writing these books together impact your own marriage?

We love doing life together. Whether it’s ministry, travel, or writing, creating something side by side is one of our greatest joys. While we each wrote our respective books separately, we came together during the editing process—and it was such a sweet experience.

Hearing each other’s hearts through the prayers and personal stories was deeply healing and impactful. We got to see new glimpses into each other’s spiritual lives and witness God’s faithfulness in fresh ways. These books aren’t just a resource we created—they’re something we live out. We pray the prayers over one another daily and reread the stories to remind ourselves of how God has moved in our marriage.

This project was a dream come true, and walking through it together has strengthened our bond, grown our intimacy, and encouraged us in new ways. We are so thankful that what started as a desire to bless others has ended up blessing our own marriage even more.

How can prayer help couples navigate conflicts or difficult seasons?

Prayer is one of the most accessible and powerful tools we have as believers. We can approach God at any moment, in any place, with whatever is on our hearts (Hebrews 4:16).

In times of conflict or difficulty, prayer can become your lifeline. It allows you to bring your emotions to God—your anger, confusion, pain, and fear—and receive His peace in return (Philippians 4:6–7).

We’ve found that praying for each other, especially during hard times, helps us see our spouse through God’s eyes. Sometimes your spouse might not even know how to pray, but you can intercede on their behalf. That’s powerful. God can change hearts, bring healing, and provide wisdom that no argument ever could.

If your marriage is going through a rough patch, don’t shut down. Don’t withdraw from your spouse or from God. Run to Him. Lay your burdens at His feet. Pray with your spouse when possible—and when you can’t, pray for them. Prayer is not just about solving problems; it’s about inviting God into them.

We’ve seen God move through our prayers, healing old wounds, softening hearts, and giving us strength we didn’t have on our own. As new challenges arise, prayer allows us to continue growing in love and in our understanding of one another. It’s not a one-time fix. It’s a lifelong invitation to grow together in the presence of God.
