Cover Stories: Word before World
Cover Stories: Word before World

Cover Stories takes you behind the scenes with Tyndale designers as they share the inspiration, process, and details that make each book cover unique.
I had the opportunity to design Gretchen Saffles’ first trade book, The Well-Watered Woman, a few years back and loved working with her. When she expressed her vision for this next book, Word before World, to have a vintage yet modern feel using nature imagery, I knew exactly whom to contact: Jill De Haan.
It was a joy getting to work with Jill again and she knocked it out of the park, per usual. The cover combines imagery from a few of Gretchen’s devotionals and personal stories, with the primary concept being an open Bible placed in front of a window (doubling as a vintage frame)… literally showing how we must keep the Word first in our lives before the world.
The interior continues the vintage book feel with decorative chapter opener embellishments and gorgeous full-page callouts. I’ve included some of my favorites in this post, but you’ll have to buy the book to see the rest!
